My Journey to International Career
There was a time when I thought the only way to build an international career was to immediately move abroad. But I soon realized that working remotely could be the perfect first step.
Working remotely taught me much more than just attending meetings from home. It helped me build communication skills, manage my own schedule, collaborate with people in different locations, and prepare myself to work in a global environment.
Here are some things I learned along the way.
My daily tasks
Working remotely may seem like a relaxing experience, but it requires a lot of discipline.
Typical daily tasks include:
- Attending online meetings with teammates.
- Testing and documenting system requirements.
- Following up on tasks via chat and project management tools.
- Preparing reports and keeping everyone informed of project progress.
- Learning independently every time I encounter something new.
My Unexpected Challenges
Time Management
When you work from home, there’s no manager looking over your shoulder.
At first, it was easy to lose focus or underestimate how long tasks would take. Eventually, I learned how to prioritize my work and how to organize my day more effectively.
Communication is everything
When you work remotely, people can’t see your facial expressions or body language.
This means that every message needs to have enough background information, screenshots, and clear explanations to avoid misunderstandings. Good written communication has become one of the most valuable skills I’ve developed.
Independent Learning
Unlike in college, there’s always someone there to explain every detail.
Sometimes, you have to research documentation, experiment with systems, and solve problems yourself before you can ask for help.
Why Working Remotely Is Worth It
Working remotely has given me experiences I wouldn’t have otherwise.
- I have collaborated with people from all walks of life.
- I have become more independent.
- I have improved my professional communication skills.
- I have learned to manage my own workload.
Most importantly, I have gained confidence working without constant supervision.
Looking ahead: Relocating
Working remotely has made me realize that my long-term goal is to relocate and work internationally.
While technical skills are important, companies also value people who can communicate clearly, adapt quickly, and collaborate across cultures.
Working remotely has been excellent preparation for the next step.
Would I recommend it?
Working remotely is not the “easy way out.” In many ways, success depends on your discipline, communication, and ability to learn independently, making it more challenging.
If your goal is to work abroad one day, starting out remotely can be one of the best ways to build the experience and confidence you need when that relocation opportunity finally arrives.
